Different Forms of CBD
CBD products can be made using different extraction and processing methods, resulting in a variety of formats and cannabinoid profiles. Understanding these differences can help customers make informed purchasing decisions based on labeling, ingredient composition, and personal preferences.
Below is an overview of the most common forms of CBD found on the market today.
CBD from Phytocannabinoid-Rich (PCR) Hemp
Phytocannabinoid-rich hemp is federally legal hemp that naturally contains cannabidiol (CBD) along with trace amounts of other hemp-derived compounds. By definition, PCR hemp contains very low levels of THC that remain within federally legal limits.
Some CBD products retain these trace amounts of THC, while others undergo additional processing to remove detectable THC. Product labels and third-party lab reports provide details about cannabinoid content.
Celestial Stem offers both Full Spectrum and THC-Free Broad Spectrum options, all of which are third-party tested for transparency.
Full Spectrum CBD Oil
Full Spectrum CBD oil is produced using hemp extracts that retain a range of naturally occurring hemp-derived compounds, including cannabinoids and aromatic plant compounds found in the original plant.
These products may contain trace amounts of THC within federally legal limits. Full Spectrum CBD oils are clearly labeled so customers can review cannabinoid profiles prior to purchase.
THC-Free Broad Spectrum CBD Oil
Broad Spectrum CBD oil is processed to remove detectable THC while maintaining a multi-compound hemp profile. These products are often chosen by customers who prefer to avoid THC altogether.
THC-Free Broad Spectrum products should not be confused with CBD isolates, as they are produced using different processing methods and contain a broader range of hemp-derived components.
CBD Isolate
CBD isolate is a purified form of cannabidiol that contains CBD alone, without other hemp-derived compounds. During processing, additional cannabinoids and plant compounds are removed.
CBD isolate is commonly used as an ingredient in various products. Celestial Stem does not sell CBD isolate products.
CBD from Marijuana (Cannabis Oil)
CBD can also be extracted from marijuana plants, which are classified differently under federal and state law. Oils produced from marijuana are commonly referred to as cannabis oil and may contain higher levels of THC.
Cannabis-derived products are regulated separately and are not legal in all states. Celestial Stem does not sell marijuana-derived products.
Raw CBD Oil
Raw CBD oil refers to hemp extracts that undergo minimal post-extraction processing. These oils may contain a wide range of naturally occurring plant components, including waxes and chlorophyll, which can affect appearance and consistency.
Raw oils are less commonly found in finished retail products due to their unrefined nature.
Hemp Seed Oil
Hemp seed oil is produced by pressing hemp seeds and does not contain cannabidiol (CBD). While hemp seed oil is used in various food and cosmetic products, it is not a source of CBD.
Celestial Stem does not sell hemp seed oil products.
